It's about floor traders in the pit at the exchange in Chicago before computers reduced the number of traders and market makers in the pit. That's why you see so many bits of paper.
Your concept of 'holding papers like tickets' is the same as when we trade on our computers; we open a ticket. There's not so much paper.
They would be trading many things, mainly commodoties. Whether it s FOREX or not doesn't matter. The principle of trading is exactly the same.
Maybe this link will be better for you: http://www.babelgum.com/Floored
Watch all of it and tell me that trading is not gambling. It's much more informative that a paragraph in a book.

This article also explains similarities and differences between gambling and other types of investment opportunities (mainly forex). I think article writer wants us to conclude the bottom line.
So there are some similarities and there are also differences. I think forex is not gambling coz even gambler and a businessman have some similarities. We cannot say that a businessman is a gambler
Thankyou

There are differencies between trading and gambling. Gambling is on a 50% probability scheme, trading is not. Examples? 40% of the retracements happen between 61.8 and 78.6 Fibonacci. Pivots. Trendlines. ...
